A 1 bedroom cabin on the beach of Humboldt Bay. Nestled in a eucalyptus grove 15 minutes from Arcata and Eureka, Waterfront 1 is scenic, rustic, and romantic. Waterfront 1 is located on the 22 acre Oyster Beach, part of Humboldt Bay Social Club. Humboldt Bay Social Club is a vacation rental resort, boutique hotel, event space and Lobby Bar. Waterfront 1 was originally the caretaker's residence for the 100 year old property. It is located at the far end of Oyster Beach, just steps from the beach. It was the first restoration we undertook at Oyster Beach, and we did much of the work ourselves. It was a true labor of love, and each rustic detail represents a piece of the ranch's history. An antique Wedgewood stove and hand-nailed salvaged redwood paneling frame huge windows looking out on the water in the kitchen. The enclosed porch, with its vintage Chesterfield couch and clawfoot tub, is the perfect vantage point for the sunrise. The master bedroom includes a full-sized sleeper sofa, ideal for families or friends willing to get cozy. A washer and dryer and cable TV add a few modern touches to what is otherwise a step back in time. The cabin sleeps 4. There is a king-sized bed and a pull out couch in the Master Bedroom (please let us know if you would like the pull-out couch made up for your arrival). There are 4 other vacation rental cabins at Oyster Beach and 4 hotel suites across the street at Samoa Field. Waterfront 2 is next door to Waterfront 1 and the other cabins are on the far end of the property. The homes can be rented together to accommodate larger groups or special events. Attention has been paid to the design of each unit to maximize guest privacy. The Bathhouse at Oyster Beach is open to all guests of Humboldt Bay Social Club. The Bathhouse features an outdoor shower and sink and two clawfoot tubs, so you can soak under the stars. Each cabin at the Social Club is outfitted with amenities to make your stay at the beach as relaxed as possible- beach chairs, towels, blankets, a cooler and ice bucket for beverages. The Lobby Bar of the Social Club is open to the public every day from 4 pm and is located across the street at Samoa Field. Receive a warm welcome at this owner hosted, artfully restored 1914 farm house surrounded by hundreds of acres of rich farm land and perfectly placed in the Mad River estuary. It is just steps from the river and a ten minute walk to miles of pristine beach. There are 2 12 foot kayaks available for seasonal use by guests along with life vests (at their own liability risk). Sit on the porch and relax to nature's sounds: birds chirping, waves crashing, river currents lapping the shoreline and wind rustling through the trees. Sara and Ty will meet and greet you at the cozy and comfortable two story, 2 bedroom home filled with vintage charm. They designed a one of a kind river rock hearth and wood burning stove that create a warm glowing ambiance in the family room. Cozy up by the fire and enjoy a movie on the 40 inch Smart T.V. Both bedrooms are bright, cheerful and boast comfortable Queen beds with Egyptian cotton linens. The downstairs bedroom has a romantic East Indies decor with mosquito netting and Indian art. The small but complete and fully stocked kitchen is a delight for cooking. The bathroom is beautifully tiled, has a refinished deep vintage cast iron bath tub, rain shower head with exposed plumbing and galvanized metal surround creating a real rustic farm house feeling. Recycled Redwood accents and surf art add even more character to this quaint river home. Sarah, Ty and their young son live just next door on the property with their 3 wonderful dogs and Blaze, their 23 year old sweet Arabian horse. They are happy to show you around the property and even share their paddle boat. The property has a 1/2 acre garden with river access. The flowering gardens include several rose varieties, different types of lilies, fuchsias, and salvias. There are two 30 year old tree ferns, an apple tree, along with maples and other flowering trees. Guests will also enjoy the large organic vegetable garden with raised beds. About a 1/3 of the property is used by Blaze the horse. Blaze has a sweet, good nature, but unexpected quick movements will spook him so guests need to refrain from going inside the fencing to visit with him. Please watch children closely so they do not put themselves into harms way out of curiosity. At the back of the property is an open grass lawn that contains a fire ring. Off the back lawn is a path that leads you through the trees, to the gate that opens up to the river. In the summer at low tide there are expansive gravel bars to sit on and read a book, wade in the pools dug out by the river, or walk across the river to a trail system on the opposite side. During the summer season, at high tide the river becomes like a still lake deep enough for canoes, kayaks, and shallow hulled boats to venture a couple miles up the river to the 101 bridge, or the opposite way toward the beach/dunes. The estuary, farm lands, beach, and dunes are a constant changing tapestry of color that many types of wildlife call home. While relaxing on the bank or exploring the water way by boat one might see seals and otters hunting and playing, by day. Armed with an Audubon an explorer will see many different species of birds including swallows, kingfishers, herons, egrets, ducks and geese, as well as various kinds of Hawks and other birds of prey. At sunset sit out on the river bank, sip a glass of wine, listen to the stillness of the evening and possibly you may see the resident beaver swim up the river. *Due to proximity to the river, un-fenced yard w/ a horse and 3 dogs on the property children require close parental supervision. **Due to the rural setting limited satellite high-speed internet is available but no Cable or DSL Internet. The satellite internet does allow video and music streaming. Sorry, no dishwasher or on-site laundry available. 5.8 miles to plaza, approximately a 30 min bike ride and 13 min drive 3.7 miles to mad river hospital, a 9 min drive 13 miles to old town Eureka, 25 min drive 6 mile bike ride to Clam beach, via the Hammond Trail bike path, 35 min bike ride

This property is EXCELLENCE rated by Tripadvisor. GATEWAY STAY 2 bedroom/2 bath upscale vacation rental, which can accommodate 6 guests, is part of the ARCATA STAY LODGING NETWORK OF EXCEPTIONAL ACCOMMODATIONS. This is a 2nd story apartment in a historic building in a great central location, 2 blocks from the Humboldt State University Gateway at 14th Street and L.K. Wood Boulevard, one half block from Wildberries Marketplace (like a Whole Foods Market but locally owned), 2 blocks from the Northtown shopping and restaurant district, and 4 blocks from Arcata’s downtown plaza square. Leave your car and stroll to boutiques, eateries, galleries, nightlife venues, movies, the Arcata Marsh Wildlife Sanctuary, Redwood Park trails, and HSU campus. Gateway Stay is 1000 square feet, and was re-modeled and newly furnished in April/May 2013; our first Arcata Stay guest occupied the apartment over Memorial Weekend. The owners painted throughout and installed new stainless steel appliances, lighting sconces and chandelier, plumbing fixtures, counter tops, wood floors, Marmoleum, bedroom carpet, hardware, baseboards, blinds, and window treatments. Gateway Stay is a historically unique and very special property. The apartment occupies the second story of a lovingly restored 1906 Neoclassic Craftsman home, custom built as his own residence by renowned architect/builder Nelson Johansen. Johansen was responsible for designing and building a variety of Arcata’s finest residences and retail buildings around the turn of the 20th century, especially in what locals call the “top of the hill” neighborhood, on G and H Streets north of Arcata Plaza. During his early building years, Mr. Johansen saved the finest curly redwood and burl panels found in his trade. He crafted this beautiful wood into his home and it is evident throughout in multi-light windows, doors, and trim. The soaring vaulted ceiling in the redwood great room is solid redwood, as are cabinets, book shelves, and cupboards, lending a lodge-like atmosphere to the space. Beautiful oiled bronze sconces up-light the ceiling, enhancing its many angles with reflective warmth. The lofty redwood great room is a splendid space, constructed with a myriad of open rafter and beam angles, finished with oiled bronze hardware, and new wood floors. It is open floor plan with ample lighting; truly, the room glows. The color palette is warmly neutral, enhanced by original art pieces (some by local artists), a hand-tufted Craftsman-inspired oriental carpet, lovely sheer window treatments, and luminous art glass lighting. Though not presently functional, a historic artifact found in the redwood great room is the cast iron wood stove, original to the home's construction. Once located in the basement, the stove heated the entire residence with a ducting system similar to how we heat with forced air today, but state of the art for its time. Visitors can gather together in this room in the comfortable conversation area and watch flat screen TV, enjoy group meals at the dining table which expands with built-in leaves, and indulge their gourmet creativity in the fully equipped kitchen with tile/butcher block island, gas cook top, Jenn-Air grill, dishwasher, refrigerator with dispensers and ice maker, built in oven and microwave, and plenty of cupboard space. At the sink counter, guests can look out the window and experience the ever changing view of Arcata Bay skies and tides. Both spacious and bright bedrooms feature new furnishings: memory foam mattresses, sumptuous linens, chenille spreads, duvet comforters, ample down pillows, and nightstands with storage and reading lamps. The front bedroom has a king bed, a large closet, bath ensuite with antique porcelain soaking tub, and a separate desk area. The back bedroom has a queen bed, an entire wall of closets, television, bath ensuite with a walk in shower and multi-jet shower head, and a built in counter sink with cupboard storage in the main room. The front-loading “high efficiency” stainless steel laundry center is in a small room adjacent to the back bedroom. The sofa in the great room can convert into a double bed which can accommodate 2 additional guests. Other amenities include wireless internet, expanded cable TV, DVD library, 2 computer work stations, introductory kit of coffee and tea service, spa robes, magnifying mirrors, bath products, umbrellas, hair dryers, books, games, tourism information, and dining menu guides.

Adjacent to Janes Creek where hiking trails can be accessed. Arcata Marsh & Wildlife Sanctuary The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary is home to the City of Arcata’s innovative wastewater treatment facility. The sanctuary is 307 acres, including freshwater marshes, salt marsh, tidal sloughs, grassy uplands, mudflats, brackish marsh, approximately 5 miles of walking and biking paths (PDF) and an Interpretive Center. By integrating conventional wastewater treatment with the natural processes of constructed wetlands, Arcata has succeeded in turning wastewater into a resource. Located at the north end of Humboldt Bay, the sanctuary is situated along the Pacific Flyway, a major migratory route for thousands of birds that breed in the far north and winter in California, Mexico and Central and South America. The Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary has probably the highest bird populated coastal site between Bodega Harbor and Washington, with literally thousands of birding visitors annually and organized bird walks held at least weekly year-round. The Marsh has hosted over 300 bird species. Join the Redwood Region Audubon Society's tour which they lead every Saturday at 8:30 a.m., rain or shine. Meet at the foot of I Street. City Forests Community-based forestry is a participatory approach to forest management that strengthens communities’ capacity to build vibrant local economies while protecting and enhancing their local forest ecosystems. By integrating ecological, social, and economic strategies into cohesive approaches to forestry issues, community-based approaches give local residents both the opportunity and the responsibility to manage their natural resources effectively and to enjoy the benefits of that responsibility. -Aspen Institute Explore Arcata offers many ways to explore our forests, marshes and community through recreational programs for all ages. Learn more about these opportunities and sign up today. Forest The Arcata Community Forest, established in 1955, is comprised of 2,350 acres of second growth redwood forest in Humboldt County, California. Community Forests are relatively rare in the western United States but recently there has been an increasing interest and effort to establish community forests. Timber harvest revenue funds forest operations, habitat restoration and management of the forest for recreational uses. A combination of working forest areas, special management areas and ecological reserves create a balanced management approach. Community forestry in Arcata is designed to provide local residents the opportunity and responsibility to manage their natural resources. Visual Backdrop & Recreational Draw The forest forms the visual backdrop of the town and provides extensive passive recreational use (i.e. hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding and nature walks). Although the 16,000 town residents own the Arcata forest, stakeholders include the surrounding communities and the greater Humboldt County area. The forest is a recreational draw in the region due its extensive trail system that supports hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Redwood Forest Bird Checklist The Redwood Forest Bird Checklist (PDF) provides a list of the 144 bird species that may be found in the Arcata Community Forest. Video Watch this 6:06 minute video to learn more about the Arcata Community Forest and how it is managed. Example for Other Communities The Arcata Community Forest has served as an example for other communities that have wished to acquire and manage community forest lands. For those interested in doing this, access Acquiring and Managing A Community-Owned Forest: A Manual for Communities (PDF). Welcome to Arcata!
